Electric backup / auxiliary heat strips are rated in kilowatts (kW). Read your kW from the heat-kit model number below, then convert it to BTU/h, amps, and a minimum circuit size.

kW → BTU/h, amps & circuit size

Amps = kW × 1000 ÷ volts. Minimum circuit ampacity adds the 125% continuous-load factor (CEC/NEC); the breaker shown is the next standard size up. Large strips (15 kW+) are often split across two circuits.

How to read kW from your model number

The kW rating is almost always the 1–2 digit number in the heat kit's part number — and it's printed on the kit's data tag. Common patterns by brand:

Can't find it in the model number? The kW (or total watts) is stamped on the heat-kit data plate. 5 kW = 5000 W.
