240V vs. 208V Heating Elements: Why Voltage Matters
Heating elements are rated for a specific voltage, and 240V and 208V are not interchangeable — even though they look identical. Here’s why it matters.
The two common voltages
- 240V — typical residential single-phase supply.
- 208V — common in commercial buildings on three-phase power.
What happens if you mismatch them
Heat output scales with the square of voltage, so small differences have big effects:
- 240V element on a 208V circuit: runs at only ~75% of rated wattage — weak heat, slow kilns, underperforming furnaces.
- 208V element on a 240V circuit: runs ~33% over rated wattage — overheats and burns out fast.
How to know what you have
Check the old element’s data tag for its voltage rating, and confirm your actual supply voltage (a multimeter across the circuit reads it directly). Match the replacement to your real supply — not just whatever was installed before, in case the last one was wrong.
