How to Replace a Kiln Element: Step-by-Step
Swapping a worn kiln element is one of the more DIY-friendly heating repairs — but it involves high-voltage wiring, so safety comes first. Here’s the general process.
Always follow your kiln manufacturer’s manual. This is an overview, not a substitute for model-specific instructions.
1. Disconnect and lock out power
Unplug the kiln or switch off and lock out the breaker. Verify it’s dead before touching anything. Never trust the kiln switch alone.
2. Access the connection box
Remove the panel covering the electrical connections. Note (photograph) how the element leads connect before disconnecting anything.
3. Disconnect and remove the old element
Loosen the terminal connections and free the element tails. Carefully lift the coil out of its groove — worn elements are brittle and crumble easily.
4. Seat the new element
Lay the new coil evenly into the groove without stretching or kinking it. Make sure it sits flush and the tails route to the correct terminals.
5. Reconnect and secure
Reattach the leads to the right terminals, tighten firmly (a loose connection will kill the new element), and replace the panel.
6. Test fire
Restore power and run a short test firing, watching that all elements glow evenly.
