When to Replace Your Kiln Elements (and How to Tell They're Worn)
Kiln elements don’t fail all at once — they degrade slowly with every firing as the coil oxidizes and loses resistance. Catching wear early saves you a ruined load and a stressful mid-firing failure.
How long do kiln elements last?
Most kiln elements last 100 to 200 firings, but it varies a lot:
- Firing temperature — cone 6+ work wears elements faster than low-fire.
- Atmosphere — fluxes, glazes, and salt/soda shorten element life.
- Quality — heavier-gauge coils last longer.
Signs your kiln elements are worn
- Firings take noticeably longer to reach temperature.
- The kiln stalls and can’t hit your target cone.
- Visible sagging, pitting, or hot spots on the coil.
- Coils have gone brittle and crumbly (advanced oxidation).
Replace as a set
If one element is shot and the others are the same age, replace them all. Mixing a fresh element with worn ones creates uneven heating and another service interruption soon after.
